Nothing says summer in a Portuguese household quite like a big bowl of Salada de Fruta. 🇵🇹☀️ Filled with colourful fresh fruit and lightly sweetened with Port wine and Licor Beirão, this classic dessert is often found on holiday tables, summer BBQs, weddings, baptisms, and family celebrations.

What I love most about this recipe is that it’s incredibly simple, yet always impresses guests. The fruit soaks up the sweet Portuguese flavours and becomes even better after chilling in the fridge. 🍇🍊✨

During the week, I actually make a non-alcoholic version of this recipe for my kids as part of my meal prep routine. It’s an easy way to keep fresh fruit ready to grab and enjoy throughout the week. 👩‍👧‍👦❤️

The Origins of Portuguese Fruit Salad

Fruit salads have been served throughout Portugal for generations, especially during the warmer months. While every family has their own version, many traditional recipes include a splash of Port wine, Licor Beirão, or even Madeira wine to enhance the natural sweetness of the fruit. 🍷🍑

It’s a dessert that feels elegant enough for special occasions while remaining simple enough for everyday gatherings.

Ingredients

For the Fruit Salad

🍊 2 oranges, peeled and chopped

🍎 2 apples, diced

🍐 2 pears, diced

🍌 2 bananas, sliced

🍓 1 cup strawberries, sliced

🍇 1 cup grapes, halved

🥝 1-2 kiwis, peeled and sliced

🍑 1 peach or nectarine, diced

🍋 Juice of 1 lemon

🍊 Juice of 1 orange

🍯 1 tablespoon honey (optional)

🍷 ¼ cup Port wine

🇵🇹 2 tablespoons Licor Beirão

✨ Cinnamon Stick for extra flavour

🌿 Fresh mint for garnish

Key Ingredients

Port Wine 🍷

Adds sweetness and depth while giving the fruit a rich Portuguese flavour.

Licor Beirão 🇵🇹

This beloved Portuguese liqueur adds herbal and citrus notes that pair beautifully with fresh fruit.

Citrus Juice 🍊🍋

Fresh orange and lemon juice brighten the entire dish while helping keep the fruit fresh.

Fresh Seasonal Fruit 🍓

The better the fruit, the better the salad. Choose ripe, colourful fruit for the best flavour and presentation.

How to Make Portuguese Fruit Salad

Step 1

Wash, peel, and prepare all fruit.

Step 2

Place fruit into a large serving bowl.

Step 3

Step 5

Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Step 6

Tips for Success

✅ Use ripe seasonal fruit.

✅ Chill for at least one hour before serving.

✅ Add bananas just before serving if making ahead.

✅ Taste before serving and adjust sweetness if needed.

✅ For extra flavour, add a cinnamon stick while chilling.

Non-Alcoholic Version for Kids

Looking for a family-friendly version? 👶🍓

Simply omit the Port wine and Licor Beirão.

Instead, use:

🍊 Extra orange juice

🍍 Pineapple juice

🍯 A touch of honey if desired

This is actually my go-to fruit prep method for my kids during the week. It keeps fruit fresh, delicious, and ready to enjoy. ❤️

How to Serve
